Understand How Horsepower Relates to Your Vehicle

Horsepower is the measure of a car engine’s performance. One horsepower is equivalent to the energy required to complete 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute. James Watt, an 18th-century engineer, discovered the measurement after observing horses operate a mine pump driven by gears. Many centuries later, automobile manufacturers still use horsepower (HP) to calculate the vehicle engine's ability.

According to James Watt, one horse can lift 22,000 lbs over one foot in a minute. Multiplying 22,000 lbs gives you the value of a horsepower-33,000 lbs over one foot per minute.
